September 2, 2001 (Final Rehearsal)

Hirsch's Log
As always happens with a “tech rehearsal”, things got off to a late start. This was mostly due to the seamstresses (Rose and Aldith) finishing up the curtains we are using around the windows, doors and archways for the sets. Once they were done, some work was finished on costumes, but the rehearsal was started. In the meantime, while waiting for the curtains, we had fun looking at the weird and interesting things placed by Juan and Seamus on the back of the flats (ranging from over a doorway “Two Hour Wait From This Point”, to the “menu” from the Inn over that doorway; and so on ...), practicing going through doors, working with windows with the curtains, and so on.
The actual rehearsal was a bit rough, as you might expect (people catching curtains in doorways, that kind of thing; some lines got dropped; but as noted, it was really expected). The important thing is that the physical stuff worked with no one getting hurt, and it worked well ... despite the things that did go wrong, I feel we’re pretty tight, and ready to roll. In 11 years, we’ve always managed to rise to our performances, and sometimes the most rough spots miraculously disappear. It can be really amazing ... reminds me of the bit in Shakespeare in Love ... “It’s a mess” (or words to that effect); “It’ll all come together.”; “How does it?”; “I don’t know, it’s a mystery.” – there are days when I just say to myself “It’s a mystery.”
We loaded up Iricus’ truck with everything that had to go to Austin in the truck, made some decisions about a few things (the makeup kit would melt in the truck ... so Meg has taking it as a carry-on for her flights). Some silliness of course occurred, with the group deciding that they could pack me into the truck as there was extra room, and starting to carry me off toward the truck. Iricus was going to put me on the bumper ... sheesh. Energy was good, everyone was feeling pretty up.
Next we had a potluck dinner, and some sewing continued. After a very nice dinner, some folk left, others hung out, more sewing was done by Aldith and Rose, and in between things some cleanup was done. By the time Aldith, Meg and I left (near 8 in the evening), all the sewing but a couple of small things was done (Nightshade’s sleeves needed some work, and so did Anne’s, Anne took hers with her, and Aldith brought Nightshade’s home ...).
